Seasonal work – everything you need to know

Many of us decide to travel abroad on a seasonal basis. Seasonal work allows you to repair your budget. But what exactly is this type of employment? Is it really a job for us? What should we pay special attention to? In this article we will answer these and other questions.

Seasonal work

Seasonal work this is the type of work that is performed usually once a year, most often abroad. In the high season, so many employees are needed that companies are significantly increasing their number. According to EU regulations, work in the territory of the European Union cannot last longer than 8 months.

Usually, we go abroad to harvest vegetables and seasonal fruits, besides working in the hotel and catering industry is also popular. Poles most often work in France, the Netherlands, or Germany.

It is also possible to work seasonally in Poland – for example, during increased tourist traffic at the seaside in summer or in the mountains in winter. Typically, this type of employment is used by pupils and students who collect their professional experience and earn their pleasures. This is often related to the fact that, for example, in the summer many employees are on vacation, and therefore there is a shortage of workers.

Is seasonal work profitable?

Working in high season can certainly help us repair our home budget, especially when we work abroad. Usually, in such cases, employees save while being in another country to bring as much money as possible to Poland. Earnings in many cases are much higher than the Polish average. In addition, seasonal workers usually focus on work, they want to work as much as possible to make it profitable.

How to prepare for seasonal work?

It happens that people go abroad blindly to look for work there, already there. Often times, they end up spending all of their savings but failing to find employment and are forced to return home. Therefore, it is definitely worth preparing for your search in advance.

First of all, you should use proven agencies, employment agencies, or specialized portals. Thanks to this, we will be sure that everything will run smoothly and we will not be in the middle of nowhere, without work and money. Let’s check the opinions on the Internet, and ask friends as well.

Most likely one of our friends has already taken the opportunity to go to work abroad. So it’s worth asking him if he recommends his workplace, what it all looks like. The recommended place is more reliable, it will also reduce the stress, which will certainly accompany us before departure, especially when we will do seasonal work for the first time.

Take care also for the company that employs us to sign an employment contract with us. Some of them propose a mandate contract or even starting their own business. However, it is worth knowing that it is not in accordance with Polish law, according to which this form of contract will be tantamount to employment in several companies. The seasonal employer should provide us with an employment contract.

Is language knowledge necessary?

Many people who choose seasonal work wonder if they need to know the language of the country they are leaving for. Of course, such a skill makes everyday functioning much easier, but a lot also depends on where we work. When it comes to caring for the elderly or working in a hotel, the language will certainly be very necessary, but if we decided to harvest vegetables or fruits, communicative knowledge is enough for a larger group of Poles.

What can seasonal work give us?

Seasonal work is not only, as already mentioned, a good way to repair your home budget, it can also give us other benefits worth mentioning.

First of all, we have the opportunity to go to another country, get to know its inhabitants and culture. In our free time, we can visit, try the local cuisine, and make trips. Therefore, work with pleasure, and in many cases even with passion.

Seasonal work can also make us meet interesting people, with whom we will be there for what day to do my duties. Perhaps we will find friendships and relationships that will not end with the season. We also have the opportunity to make friends with people from different countries who also decided to work in this place.

This type of work can also be a great practice for us. Often the requirements are lower than for the same job in Poland. Abroad, we can learn a profession and acquire the appropriate qualifications.

To go or not to go?

Seasonal work can be really difficult. It often requires a lot of physical strength, it is also associated with separation from loved ones. It is worth considering whether this type of work really suits us, whether we can cope with the obligations and longing. It may seem that it is only a moment, but even several months of separating from loved ones can be painful. We should remember, however, that we can always go with someone who is friendly to us and have support. Certainly, going to another country, especially when we didn’t know it before, will be very stressful, but seasonal work can bring us many benefits.
